Course Information
Description Prevention and care of athletic injuries with emphasis on qualities of a good athletic trainer, avoiding accidents and injuries, recognizing signs and symptoms of specific sports injuries and conditions, immediate and long-term care of injuries, and administration procedures in athletic training.
Prerequisites None (Preferably taken anatomy & physiology classes)
Learning Outcomes Understand the role of the athletic trainer as a health care provider
Identify principles of physical conditioning
Apply proper taping techniques
Understand the concept of rehabilitation
Define and utilize universal precautions when dealing with wounds
Understand the basic components of an off-the-field examination (SOAP)
Explain the basic principles and concepts of ergonomics and their relationship to the prevention of illness and injury
Core Objectives * Communication Skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.
* Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.
* Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.
Program Student Learning Outcomes SLO 1: Students will be able to recognize and discuss the major biomechanical factors occurring in common sports injuries.
SLO 2: Students will be able to skillfully tape a variety of musculoskeletal problems associated with sports injury.
